February, 2 - World Wetlands Day

The Convention on Wetlands, which has international significance primarily as habitats for waterfowl, was signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran and has since been known as Ramsar Convention. World Wetland Day firstly was celebrated in 1997.

The main objective of Ramsar Convention is the conservation and rational use of wetlands as means of achieving sustainable development throughout the World. At present, 168 countries have joined Ramsar Convention. The list of water-marsh complexes of international importance includes 2186 wetland complexes with a total area of more than 208 million hectares.

Currently, there are 10 wetlands of international importance in Kazakhstan, 4 of which are located in Kostanay region. Our professors - Dr. T.M. Bragina and Ph.D. E.A. Bragin participated in the description and nomination of 5 most important wetlands of Kazakhstan. They are also participants in Ramsar Regional Initiative of Central Asia (RRI-CA), supported by government agencies, the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, the World Wildlife Fund, the Regional Environmental Center of the Countries (REC Central Asia).

Activities held annually on February, 2 on World Wetlands Day are made to pay the attention of the public and governments around the world to the value of wetlands to support the sustainable development of our planet. The theme of the World Day of Wetlands in 2017 is "Wetlands for disaster risk reduction".
