Intensive course in molecular methods and data analyses at the molecular lab of the natural history museum, University of Oslo (Norway)

From 1 to 15 February 2019, an international scientific training took place of teachers of natural-mathematical faculty of natural sciences department – Bragina T.M., Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor, Bobrenko M.A., Master of Biology, the head of SRC of Science and international relations office, Rulyova M.M., Master of Biology, senior lecture. The international scientific training was at the molecular lab of the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo (Norway).

The training course was made possible by a grant from the participant of the international project of Professor Bragina T.M. on the development of innovative molecular genetic methods of studying insects. The training was supported by the project CPEA-LT-2016/10140 and funded by the Eurasia Programme of the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU). University teachers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine participated in this training.

Associate Professor of the University of Oslo Gusarov V.I. provided training on materials collected by project participants. Collection materials are collected by project participants within the framework of the R&D projects of the Research Center for Problems of Biology and Ecology of the KSPU.

The training included extraction of total genomic DNA from arthropod samples, PCR amplification of selected markers (e.g., CO1), visualization of PCR products by agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR optimization and troubleshooting, enzymatic PCR product cleaning, sample preparation for custom Sanger sequencing, primer design, assembling contigs, sequence editing and alignment. In addition, the project participants familiarized themselves with the University’s education system, the equipping of laboratories and classrooms, museum expositions, and museum exhibits at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Oslo.

Teachers have successfully completed the training program and passed all the tests. They have reached the level where can start working in molecular lab independently and with confidence apply the skills they mastered during them training.

Based on the course materials, a seminar was held at the Department of Natural Sciences.
